FROM POLITICO: The Trump administration will require millions of low-income people to reapply for food stamps as part of an effort to crack down on “fraud,” Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said.
Rollins told Newsmax on Thursday that she plans to “have everyone reapply for their benefits, make sure that everyone that’s taking a taxpayer-funded benefit through … food stamps, that they literally are vulnerable and they can’t survive without it.”
She did not provide further information on when or how people would need to reapply.
Her comment comes after funds for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program ran out of federal funding during the government shutdown, leading many conservative pundits and even President Donald Trump to criticize just how much the government spends on food stamps. SNAP, which serves nearly 42 million Americans, cost roughly $100 billion in fiscal year 2024.
SNAP fraud encompasses varying schemes related to applicants misrepresenting details to qualify, retailers exchanging benefits for cash, and criminals skimming EBT cards for benefits, per USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service.
Anti-hunger groups claim that fraud is rare and that SNAP participants only get about $6 a day in benefits. But Rollins says 186,000 “deceased men and women and children” are “receiving a check” through SNAP, according to data collected from 29 states.
Rollins has been sounding the alarm over the massive amount of fraud she has found in the SNAP program. In an interview with Fox News host Laura Ingraham on Wednesday, she announced:
- “5,000 DEAD PEOPLE getting SNAP. And 500,000 PEOPLE getting SNAP twice under the same name.”
- “This light has now been shined on one of the most CORRUPT, DISFUNCTIONAL programs in American history.”
- “80% of able-bodied Americans on these benefits CAN work. They choose not to work because taxpayers are footing the bill.”

On Thursday, she shared a video of a CNN interview and wrote:

Rollins also sounded the alarm during an interview with Newsmax, and noted that the fraud is likely to be much worse once they get their hands on the data from many Democrat-controlled states, who are currently refusing to hand it over.

President Donald J. Trump has denounced the misuse of SNAP benefits. In comments to Fox News on Monday, Trump said, “People keep talking about SNAP. But SNAP is supposed to be if you’re down and out. The number is many times what it should be.
“It really puts the country in jeopardy. People that need it have to get it. I’m all for it,” Trump added. “But people who are able-bodied can do a job — they leave their job because they figure they can pick this up, it’s easier. That’s not the purpose of it.”
