MIXED MESSAGE: Rep. MTG rips GOP’s Cuomo unity push to defeat Zohran Mamdani

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) on Tuesday blasted Republicans, urging support for independent NYC mayoral candidate Andrew Cuomo over GOP nominee Curtis Sliwa.

“I’m amazed at how many Republicans have suddenly forgotten or completely don’t care that Cuomo killed elderly people in nursing homes by putting COVID patients IN the nursing homes and enforced some of the most insane Covid lockdowns in the country!” Greene wrote in a lengthy post on the social platform X. “But are now saying the NY Republican mayoral candidate should drop out so that the literal COVID Communist, Cuomo, can win and become mayor of NY again.”

Greene added that she “can’t even imagine if my mother or father was murdered in a New York nursing home because of Andrew Cuomo putting Covid patients in the nursing homes and then telling me that I have to vote for him. Are you kidding me?”

Though she didn’t name anyone, billionaires Bill Ackman and John Catsimatidis have both called on Curtis Sliwa to withdraw from the race.

New York Attorney General Letitia James’s 2021 report found former Gov. Andrew Cuomo understated nursing home COVID deaths by over 50% after requiring facilities to admit “medically stable” seniors. The Department of Justice later opened an investigation into his congressional testimony on the issue.

A Cuomo spokesperson told The Hill on Wednesday that the former governor followed federal guidelines and denied any wrongdoing, criticizing Greene for implying otherwise.

“She doesn’t care about the future of New York City … she doesn’t have a vote in this race and clearly she is one of the national Republicans salivating at the prospect of having a pro-defund the police, pro-prostitution, and pro-abolishing jails Socialist as a national Democratic Party poster child to run against,” Cuomo’s spokesperson, Rich Azzopardi, said.

Polls have consistently shown Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani leading comfortably over Cuomo in New York City’s mayoral race. His platform of rent freezes, free buses, and no-cost child care has drawn sharp criticism from President Trump and Republicans, who view Cuomo as a more experienced alternative.
