FROM NBC NEWS: John Bolton has just left his home in Bethesda, Maryland, and is expected to surrender to authorities, two senior federal law enforcement sources told NBC News yesterday after the former national security adviser for Trump was indicted on federal charges.
Bolton is expected to make his initial court appearance later today, the two law enforcement sources said.
Prosecutors have been investigating whether Bolton improperly retained classified materials after his departure from the first Trump administration.
Bolton is accused of sending sensitive national security documents through a personal AOL email account. The AOL account was allegedly later hacked, leading to even more concerns.
The first Trump administration had opened an investigation in 2020 about “Bolton’s alleged use of a private email to send classified national security documents to his wife and daughter from his work desk before his dismissal by Trump in September 2019.”
The Biden administration closed the investigation in 2021, but the new Trump administration has reopened it. The public learned about the investigation into Bolton in August when the FBI searched his home in Maryland and his office in Washington.
Bolton, 76, briefly served as Trump’s national security advisor in the first Trump administration, from April 2018 until Trump fired him on September 10, 2019. He later turned into a staunch Trump critic, and has written a “tell-all” book, titled, “The Room Where It Happened.”
