WATCH: Liberal CNN analyst Van Jones shares ‘shocking’ text Charlie Kirk sent him — a day before assassination

From the New York Post: Liberal CNN analyst Van Jones revealed Saturday that he received a message from conservative activist Charlie Kirk that “shocked” him one day before the influencer was assassinated at a college tour event in Utah.

“Hey Van, I mean it, I’d love to have you on my show to have a respectful conversation about crime and race,” Kirk wrote in his message, which Jones shared on his Instagram.

Jones, who said he and Kirk were “beefing hard” in the last week of the Turning Point USA founder’s life, was clearly moved by the message.

“I would be a gentleman as I know you would be as well,” the slain 31-year-old conservative activist had added. “We can disagree about the issues agreeably.”

In a post on X, Jones shared a video of a discussion he had with CNN’s Anderson Cooper about the message he received from Kirk. In explanation, Jones wrote:

The day before he was horrifically murdered, Charlie Kirk sent me a direct message on X. Unfortunately, before I could even respond, Charlie Kirk was killed — seemingly assassinated for the words he’d spoken.

I’ve taken issue with many of those words — sometimes strongly — but never his right to speak them. Never his right to express those views and then go home to his family. That is a sacred American value.

Kirk’s murder gives us all reason to come back to the table for dialogue. There is a rising tide of political violence that has already swept away his life and many others’ lives, from both the Left and the Right.

Violence like this should compel people in both parties to turn down the heat, seek common ground and look for off-ramps from the vitriol — as Kirk was doing with me, the day before he died.

We can choose to go the way of more violence, more outrage and more censorship — if we want to. But if we choose censorship and civil war, we cannot blame that choice on Charlie Kirk! From his last 24 hours, I have the proof that he wanted to go a very different way.

Turning Point USA spokesman Andrew Kolvet responded, “I’m glad Van chose to share this publicly. Charlie mentioned he reached out. I’m grateful the world gets to see how Charlie really was, even with his ideological foes. Van, even though he disagreed with you, Charlie told me he thought you were a “nice guy” and a “gentleman.””

On the day Kirk was killed, Jones wrote in a post on X, “Today’s attack on Charlie Kirk is absolutely horrifying and heartbreaking. He fought with words not weapons. There is no place for political violence in our society and those responsible must be swiftly brought to justice. My prayers are with Charlie’s loved ones, the traumatized students at Utah Valley University and all who have been impacted by this senseless act.”

On Instagram, Jones shared a screenshot of the message Kirk had sent him on September 9, at 1:25 p.m. – just 24 hours before Kirk was assassinated.

Jones didn’t find the message until after he learned of Kirk’s death.
