President Trump revoked former Vice President Kamala Harris’ Secret Service protection, ending an extension previously granted by former President Joe Biden.
Under federal law, former vice presidents are entitled to six months of protection after leaving office, which for Harris ended on July 21, 2025. Biden had extended Harris’ protection for an additional year due to her elevated threat profile as the first woman and first Black vice president, and later as the 2024 Democratic presidential nominee.
Trump’s memorandum, titled “Memorandum for the Secretary of Homeland Security,” directed the Secret Service to discontinue security measures beyond those required by law. A recent threat assessment reportedly found no compelling reason to continue Harris’ extended protection, despite her facing threats during her tenure. The decision comes as Harris prepares for a high-profile book tour to promote her memoir, “107 Days,” starting on September 23, 2025. California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass expressed outrage, with Bass calling it “another act of revenge” and pledging to ensure Harris’ safety in Los Angeles. Critics, including some Democrats, view the revocation as politically motivated, noting Trump’s history of ending protection for adversaries like John Bolton and Hunter Biden.
