BREAKING: Shooting at Catholic church in Minneapolis, ‘significant’ number of victims

From KARE11.com: The Minneapolis Police Department confirmed an active shooter allegedly opened fire at a church on the south side of Minneapolis Wednesday.

Details are scarce but an army of police and paramedics arrived at Annunciation Church, 509 W. 54th Street. Sources confirmed for KARE 11’s Lou Raguse that there is an active shooter situation unfolding at the church. The source says initial information indicates that there is a significant number of victims, and some of them are children.


Reportedly, there is a K-8 Catholic school located on the same property as the church. The incident is being called a “mass casualty,” although the exact number of victims is still unknown.

Media is reporting that the shooting occurred around 8:30 a.m. during an all-school mass.  School just started back on Monday, and Wednesday was the first day for the all-school mass.

The shooter is reportedly “contained.” Police have not yet confirmed whether the shooter is in custody or is deceased.

UPDATE 11:15 ET: The City of Richfield Police Department (a suburb of Minneapolis) has announced there are 20 victims.

The department wrote in a Facebook post:

MINNEAPOLIS: 509 W 54th St, Annunciation Church – Police are responding to an active shooter call. Officers are reporting 20 victims. A man dressed in all black and armed with a rifle was reported at the scene. EMS has requested a Mass Casualty Response and fire crews are bringing in additional resources.

Initial information indicated the suspect shooter is no longer a threat. However, out of an abundance of caution, we have increased Richfield’s patrol staffing to provide additional resources in Richfield and assistance to Minneapolis.

The City of Minneapolis announced on X, “There is an active police situation at Annunciation Church, 509 W. 54th St. There is no active threat to the community at this time. The shooter is contained. Stay away from the area to allow emergency personnel to help victims – W. 54th Street between Lyndale and Nicollet Ave.”

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey (D) wrote, “I’m monitoring reports of horrific violence in South Minneapolis. I’m in touch with Chief O’Hara and our emergency response team has been activated. We will share more information as soon as we can. Please give our officers the space they need to respond to the situation.”

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) wrote on X, “I’ve been briefed on a shooting at Annunciation Catholic School and will continue to provide updates as we get more information. The BCA and State Patrol are on scene. I’m praying for our kids and teachers whose first week of school was marred by this horrific act of violence.”

President Donald Trump released the following statement on Truth Social: “I have been fully briefed on the tragic shooting in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The FBI quickly responded and they are on the scene. The White House will continue to monitor this terrible situation. Please join me in praying for everyone involved!”

FBI Director Kash Patel wrote, “We are aware of reports of a shooting at a Catholic school in Minnesota. FBI agents are on scene, and we ask everyone to keep potential victims, civilians or law enforcement in harm’s way in your prayers. The @FBI will provide updates as more information becomes available.”

Attorney General Pam Bondi announced, “Our federal agents are on the scene of the horrific shooting at the Annunciation Catholic school in Minneapolis, Minnesota. My prayers are with everyone involved in this tragedy. Our team will provide updates as we receive them.”

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem wrote on X, “DHS is monitoring the horrific shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis. We are in communication with our interagency partners, and will share more information as soon as it becomes available. I am praying for the victims of this heinous attack and their families.”
