The White House announced that President Trump and private donors will fund a new $200 million ballroom, with construction starting in September and finishing before the end of his term.
“The White House is currently unable to host major functions honoring world leaders in other countries without having to install a large and unsightly tent approximately 100 yards away from the main building’s entrance,” Leavitt said, adding the new ballroom will be “a much needed and exquisite addition.”
The Secret Service will handle security upgrades during the construction of the new 90,000-square-foot White House ballroom, designed for state dinners and official events. Seating up to 650 guests, the addition will reflect the White House’s classical style and replace the current East Wing. Trump selected McCrery Architects for the design, Clark Construction to build it, and AECOM for engineering support.
Offices housed there, including the first lady’s and the visitors office, will be temporarily relocated.
