From Fox News: HONOLULU – One of the strongest earthquakes ever measured in history struck off the eastern coast of Russia on Tuesday evening, generating a tsunami that has forced thousands in Hawaii to evacuate to higher ground, and triggered urgent warnings to stay off the beaches across the entire U.S West Coast, British Columbia and southern Alaska.
Tsunami Warnings remain in effect for Hawaii and parts of Northern California and Alaska, while the rest of the entire U.S. West Coast and British Columbia are under a Tsunami Advisory following the monster magnitude 8.8 earthquake that struck just east of Petropavlovsk, Russia. Tsunami waves have been already been recorded along the coasts of Russia, Japan, and Alaska through 12:30 a.m. ET.
“A tsunami has been generated that could cause damage along coastlines of all islands in the state of Hawaii,” the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said. “Urgent action could be taken to protect lives and property.”
Hawaii Gov. Josh Green warned people to evacuate coastal zones and to expect imminent flooding on all islands.
“We do expect damage. We expect significant damage along the coastlines,” Green said. “If you stay on the beaches, you could risk death.”
