FROM WHITE HOUSE: Trump will not recommend a special prosecutor to look into Epstein files (video)

President Trump does not support appointing a special prosecutor to review the Epstein case, the White House confirmed Thursday.

However, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt added that Trump agrees the DOJ should release any new credible evidence to the public. This comes amid growing congressional calls for more transparency in the Jeffrey Epstein investigation.

Conservative activist Laura Loomer urged President Trump earlier this week to appoint a special counsel to investigate the Epstein files. Former Trump advisor Steve Bannon also backed the idea, saying the DOJ and FBI are overwhelmed and the counsel should report directly to the president. Many others with connections to conservative media have called for the appointment of a special prosecutor to the controversial case.

Attorney General Pam Bondi angered Trump’s hardline supporters by refusing to release more Epstein case evidence, despite earlier promises with FBI Director Kash Patel. The backlash, combined with Democratic criticism, led Trump to reject further transparency on the matter.

In response, Reps. Thomas Massie (R-KY) and Ro Khanna (D-CA) are pushing a House vote to release the records. Meanwhile, the DOJ fired federal prosecutor Maurene Comey, who worked on Epstein and Maxwell cases, on Wednesday. The White House referred questions about her dismissal to the DOJ.
