From Washington Examiner: Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) mocked President Donald Trump for asking Liberian President Joseph Boakai where he learned English.
Boakai joined the presidents of Mauritania, Guinea-Bissau, Senegal, and Gabon in a Wednesday meeting at the White House, in which Boakai addressed Trump in English and thanked him for “this opportunity” to meet.
“Such good English, that’s beautiful,” Trump responded. “Where did you learn to speak so beautifully?”
“Where were you educated? In Liberia? Well, that’s very interesting. It’s beautiful English,” he continued. “I have people at this table who can’t speak nearly as well.”
Crockett took to X, posting a video of the exchange and calling Trump’s comments “racist” and embarrassing.
“Trump never misses an opportunity to be racist and wrong,” Crockett wrote.
Her hyperbolic post accused Trump of finding “a new way to be embarrassing” every day.
“Asking the President of Liberia where he learned English when it’s literally the official language is peak ignorance,” she continued.
“I’m pretty sure being blatantly offensive is not how you go about conducting diplomacy…” she added.

One X user posted a reply saying, “I need someone to explain to me why that’s racist? Anyone? I guess I missed that portion of the class.”
“That’s not racism, that’s a lighthearted comment based on a historical fact that clearly went over your head,” wrote another.
A third X user wrote, “Official language but NOT the predominant language! Only about 55% speak English and it was imposed on them from free black slaves from the US. It is a “second” language to those that speak English and it is more of a creole language based on English.”
Science Direct explains, “The official language of Liberia is English but the majority of the population speaks one of 29 African languages of the Niger-Congo language family. Although the country was founded by freed American slaves, descendants of slaves only make up 5% of the total population, while the majority of the population belongs to different indigenous African ethnic groups: Kpelle, Bassa, Gio, Kru, Grebo, Mano, Krahn, Gola, Gbandi, Loma, Kisi, Vai, Dei, Bella, Mandingo, and Mende.
Regarding Trump’s comment, other users felt it was a compliment, or effective diplomacy, or kindness.
One X user turned the tables on Crockett, writing, “You never miss an opportunity to spew race-baiting nonsense.”
