From the Associated Press: BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. (AP) — A man posing as a police officer shot and killed a Minnesota lawmaker and her husband in a brazen attack at their home early Saturday, and a second lawmaker and his wife were wounded in a separate shooting in what Gov. Tim Walz described as “targeted political violence.”

Police were searching for the gunman responsible for the attacks on the Democratic legislators. Writings found inside a fake police car recovered at one of the shooting scenes mentioned the names of multiple lawmakers and other officials, Brooklyn Park Police Chief Mark Bruley said.

Two people familiar with the matter identified the suspect being sought as 57-year-old Vance Boelter. The people could not publicly discuss details of the ongoing investigation and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Melissa Hortman, a former Minnesota House Speaker, and her spouse were shot and killed early Saturday in their Brooklyn Park home. A second state lawmaker, Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, were shot multiple times in Champlin. Officials say both Hortman and Hoffman were mentioned in the suspect’s writings.

Hoffman, 60, a Democrat, was first elected as a state senator in 2012. He and his wife have one daughter.

Hortman, 55, also a Democrat, was first elected in 2004. At the time of her death she, was the top Democratic leader in the state Legislature. She and her husband, who was also killed, had two children.

WHO IS VANCE BOELTER

Boelter, 57, was appointed by Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz in 2019 to serve a limited term on the Governor’s Workforce Development Board, according to public records.  His term for the position was from December 14, 2019 through January 2, 2023.

Boelter also served on the Governor’s Workforce Development Council in 2016 under then-Gov. Mark Dayton.

Gov. Walz admitted earlier Saturday morning that the shooting was politically motivated.

Now, the gunman has been identified as someone Walz himself had appointed to the Governor’s Workforce Development Board in 2019.

Police found a pile of “No Kings” flyers in Boelter’s vehicle, along with a “manifest” which included a hit list of multiple other politicians.  The “No Kings” flyers are related to the anti-Trump protests scheduled all across the nation for Saturday.
