President Trump’s administration has requested the deployment of over 20,000 National Guard troops to assist with immigration enforcement efforts along the U.S.-Mexico border.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is coordinating this initiative, aiming to bolster the capacity of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in managing border security and deportation operations.
The proposed deployment would involve National Guard units supporting federal agencies in various roles, including surveillance, logistics, and administrative tasks. These troops would not directly engage in immigration enforcement actions, such as arrests or detainment, but would provide essential support to enhance the efficiency of ICE and CBP operations. The plan is part of the administration’s broader strategy to address unauthorized immigration and strengthen border security.
In addition to the National Guard deployment, the Trump administration has announced “Project Homecoming,” a program designed to encourage the voluntary departure of illegal aliens. Under this initiative, individuals who choose to self-deport would receive a $1,000 stipend and travel assistance. The program aims to reduce the number of illegal aliens through incentives rather than solely relying on enforcement measures.

The administration’s approach also includes the establishment of military zones along certain border areas, where troops are authorized to detain individuals who unlawfully enter these designated zones. The deployment of National Guard troops and the implementation of programs like “Project Homecoming” correspond with the administration’s commitment to addressing immigration issues through a combination of enforcement and incentive-based strategies.
