Representative Shri Thanedar, a Democrat from Michigan, introduced a privileged resolution in the House of Representatives to impeach President Donald Trump.

The resolution contains seven articles alleging offenses such as obstruction of justice, abuse of power, corruption, and “tyranny.” By submitting the resolution as privileged, Thanedar has initiated a process that requires the House to address the measure within two legislative days.

Thanedar’s action has created a complex situation for House Democrats. Many are concerned about the political ramifications of an impeachment vote, especially with the 2026 midterm elections approaching. House Republicans are expected to attempt to table the resolution, which would force Democrats to take a definitive stance on the issue.

The impeachment resolution has not received formal backing from Democratic leadership. Thanedar acknowledged that he communicated with party leaders but did not seek their permission before introducing the measure. This move has led to some Democratic lawmakers, including Reps. Jerry Nadler, Robin Kelly, and Kweisi Mfume, withdrawing their support after learning the resolution lacked leadership approval and legal vetting.

President Trump has responded to the impeachment effort by criticizing the Democrats involved, labeling them as “whackjobs” and “lowlifes.” He has urged House Republicans to consider expelling the lawmakers who introduced the resolution, arguing that the accusations are baseless and politically motivated.
