TANTRUM: Democrats refused to escort President Trump into House chamber for speech

11

Sour Democrats not only refused to applaud or stand for anything during President Donald Trump’s address to a Joint Session of Congress Tuesday night.

They also refused to participate in the congressional committee who escorted the president into the House Chamber to deliver his speech.

Ahead of Trump’s entry, House Speaker Mike Johnson and Vice President JD Vance announced the members of the escort committee.

Republican senators were announced as John Thune, John Barrasso, Tom Cotton, James Lankford Shelley Capito, and Tim Scott; and Democrat senators Chuck Schumer, Dick Durbin, Amy Klobuchar, Corey Booker, and Tammy Baldwin.

House Speaker Mike Johnson had also released a bipartisan list of House Congress members who had been appointed to the escort committee.

However, all House and Senate Democrats refused to participate in the escort committee.

CNN’s Manu Raju announced, “New — In a sign of protest, House and Senate Dem leaders didn’t leave to join the escort committee despite being called to do so. The escort committee typically escorts the president in. A spokesperson for Hakeem Jeffries told me: “It speaks for itself.””

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) wrote, “The Congressional Democrats appointed to the Escort Committee are boycotting President Trump’s speech. It’s pathetic. And embarrassing. They should show some dignity and get over their bitterness that Joe Biden lost.”

Senate Republicans blasted the Democrats, writing, “The Congressional Dems who boycotted the Escort Committee for President Trump’s speech should be ashamed of themselves. They would rather throw tantrums than face reality that President Trump won.”

CNN’s Manu Raju later weighed in again, in a post that appeared critical of the Democrats’ antics. He wrote:

Have been in the House chamber for the speech as I have for many. Have not seen an opposition party mount a protest like tonight.

House and Senate Democratic leaders didn’t join the escort committee for the president. Dems turned their back on him when he entered the chamber and didn’t shake his hand. They didn’t applaud virtually anything. Several walked out in the middle of the speech.

Lots of signs in the back being held up by Dem members — and repeated shouts of “lies” and “you’re lying.”

And a Dem member — Al Green — was escorted out by the House sergeant-at-arms for interrupting Trump for an extended period.

Dem leaders endorsed the no-applause strategy. But Jeffries and his deputies urged members against signs and props and loud outbursts.
