MANNHEIM, Germany, March 3 (Reuters) – A car drove into a crowd of people in the western German city of Mannheim on Monday, killing at least one person, injuring several others and overshadowing carnival celebrations in the region where police had been on alert for security attacks.

Police detained the car’s driver and later said he had acted alone, with no broader threat seen for the public.

People were seen lying on the ground at the scene and at least two were being resuscitated, an eyewitness told Reuters. Bild newspaper reported that two people were killed and 25 injured, 15 of them seriously, citing security sources.

BBC reportedNo details about the suspect or their potential motivation have been shared by police at this stage.

The incident comes at a time of heightened security for Mannheim’s annual carnival. There was a parade through the city centre on Sunday, with major events scheduled for Tuesday.

Police have not confirmed if the incident was a deliberate attack – only that a car drove into a group of people, and that a suspect has been arrested.

According to updates posted on social media, the death toll has risen to two.

The attack was so horrific that body parts were seen scattered on the pavement.

The attacker was described in a memo as “170 cm tall, black jacket, beard, darker skin colour, potentially with a gun.”

Journalist David Atherton reported that the driver is described as a 24-year-old Afghan.

Nine months ago, in the same area of the city, an Afghan migrant stabbed several people, killing a policeman.

A surveillance video shows the car speeding down the street, just prior to striking the crowd.
