From Florida Today: Late Tuesday afternoon, Elon Musk put out a message on X saying that President Donald Trump had asked him to return the two Boeing Starliner astronauts who have been on the space station since June as soon as possible.

“The @POTUS has asked @SpaceX to bring home the 2 astronauts stranded on the @Space_Station as soon as possible. We will do so. Terrible that the Biden administration left them there so long,” Musk wrote on X (formerly Twitter). Musk owns the social media website, is the CEO of SpaceX, and serves as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency under Trump.

Musk was referring to NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams, who launched to the International Space Station aboard Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft in June 2024. The flight was intended to last only 10 days, and would have certified Starliner to ferry NASA astronauts to and from the ISS.

But thruster issues that appeared while docking to the ISS sparked concern and after delaying the return for months to study the problem, NASA made the decision to return the spacecraft without the crew. Starliner landed with no crew onboard back in September.

President Trump later confirmed in a Truth Social post, “I have just asked Elon Musk and @SpaceX to “go get” the 2 brave astronauts who have been virtually abandoned in space by the Biden Administration. They have been waiting for many months on @Space Station. Elon will soon be on his way. Hopefully, all will be safe. Good luck Elon!!!”
