From Fox News: A hiker was brutally attacked by “suspected cartel members” while exploring a wilderness area near the U.S.-Mexico border in San Diego County, according to the U.S. Border Patrol El Centro Sector.

Officials reported the incident happened around noon on Wednesday near the border of San Diego and Imperial counties when a group of US citizens who were hiking in the Jacumba Wilderness in California was brutally attacked and pelted with gunfire by suspected cartel members.

A Department of Homeland Security (DHS) source confirmed to Fox News that two suspected cartel members, who were armed with handguns, were about a thousand yards inside the U.S. in the Jacumba area when they confronted two hikers in the group and began yelling at them in Spanish.

The source said the hikers didn’t understand, so the gunmen yelled “come”.

The report explains that the hikers turned to leave, fearing they would be kidnapped. At that point, the cartel gunmen fired two shots into the air, and then fired additional shots, striking one of the hikers in his leg.

Border Patrol agents rescued the hikers via helicopter.

News Nation correspondent Ali Bradley reported that Border Patrol agents attempted to apprehend the gunmen but they ran back into Mexico.

USBP Chief Patrol Agent Gregory K. Bovino shared a video on the helicopter rescue on X and wrote, “American hiker strafed with gunfire & shot twice by suspected #cartel #terrorists in Jacumba, CA. Cartels think they can bring their war here. Think again! Americans won’t be intimidated. Our agents & BORTAC will confront these threats HEAD ON!”

In a stark contrast to the Biden administration, Border Patrol agents clearly understand they are now free to do their job. Bovino responded to multiple comments on his post, showing they now mean business.
