From the New York Post: A terrifying new wildfire burning out of control north of Los Angeles that torched 5,000 acres in just hours Wednesday could “go nuclear,” a wildfire expert warned.
That blaze is now called the Hughes Fire, and although it has not reached urban areas, authorities have issued an evacuation order for nearby communities, including roughly 18,000 people in the town of Castaic.
At about 10:45 a.m. on Wednesday, a huge column of smoke was spotted in the wilderness near Santa Clarita, California, prompting first responders to request four aircraft and 50 fire engines, according to the fire monitoring organization Watch Duty.
President Trump had announced Monday that he plans to travel to Los Angeles on Friday to tour the devastation left behind by the previous wildfires.
Jacob Weigley, Wildfire Coordinator for Central Pierce County, Washington, told the NY Post on Wednesday, “That one’s gonna go nuclear. It’s big. You know what the fuels are capable of doing in that area right now, and what the wind does is going to be a big deal for this.”
According to the Los Angeles Times, over 19,000 people were ordered to evacuate and another 14,000 people were in areas where evacuation warnings were issued, due to the new, fast-spreading Hughes fire.
The blaze reportedly went from 50 acres to 500 acres in a matter of minutes, and has now spread to over 5,000 acres, as it is barreling down on suburban homes.
The fire jumped a lake, and headed toward an interstate.
