From the New York Post: A terrifying new wildfire burning out of control north of Los Angeles that torched 5,000 acres in just hours Wednesday could “go nuclear,” a wildfire expert warned.

That blaze is now called the Hughes Fire, and although it has not reached urban areas, authorities have issued an evacuation order for nearby communities, including roughly 18,000 people in the town of Castaic.

At about 10:45 a.m. on Wednesday, a huge column of smoke was spotted in the wilderness near Santa Clarita, California, prompting first responders to request four aircraft and 50 fire engines, according to the fire monitoring organization Watch Duty.

President Trump had announced Monday that he plans to travel to Los Angeles on Friday to tour the devastation left behind by the previous wildfires.

Jacob Weigley, Wildfire Coordinator for Central Pierce County, Washington, told the NY Post on Wednesday, “That one’s gonna go nuclear. It’s big. You know what the fuels are capable of doing in that area right now, and what the wind does is going to be a big deal for this.”

According to the Los Angeles Times, over 19,000 people were ordered to evacuate and another 14,000 people were in areas where evacuation warnings were issued, due to the new, fast-spreading Hughes fire.

The blaze reportedly went from 50 acres to 500 acres in a matter of minutes, and has now spread to over 5,000 acres, as it is barreling down on suburban homes.

The fire jumped a lake, and headed toward an interstate.

X user CalWire warned, “#HughesFire is a monster, getting close to 4000 acres in size with no end in sight. The 5 freeway is sitting square in its path right now. The entire grapevine might ignite if this isn’t stopped in time. Thousands of homes are in danger.

“This fire is moving 35 acres per minute, if you know anyone in the #SantaClarita area tell them to evacuate ASAP.”

“@FOXLA helicopter shows that the #HughesFire is now a MILE AWAY from homes in #SantaClarita. Panic is spreading as time is running out to evacuate. This is a very fast moving wildfire at 5000+ acres, 0% containment. PRAY FOR SOCAL.”

“Just got word that the 5 freeway has been closed. Drivers being told to turn around now,” CalWire warned.

KNX reporter Pete Demetriou has posted videos of the Hughes fire.

A Six Flags resort now appears to be in the path of the fire.

The Los Angeles Times provided updates on two other major wildfires that have demolished entire neighborhoods of Los Angeles. The updates are as of 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday:

Palisades Fire

  • 68% contained
  • 23,400 acres burned

  • 11 fatalities

Eaton Fire

Fox News meteorologist Janice Dean announced Wednesday afternoon:
