From CBS News: Coral Gables Police Chief Edward James Hudak Jr. announced Friday that 21 migrants, including predominantly Chinese nationals plus one Ecuadorean and a Cuban, were discovered in a U-Haul truck following an alleged abduction and human smuggling operation.
Hudak said that around 9:35 a.m., a security guard for a homeowners association observed what appeared to be an abduction on Old Cutler Road.
The police chief said the alert guard reported seeing a Toyota vehicle and a U-Haul truck involved in the incident and immediately alerted a patrol officer.
The report explains that a woman first believed to have been abducted was safely removed from the vehicle.
Then officers opened the back of the U-Haul truck and found it loaded with mostly Chinese illegal aliens.
Officials believe the group of illegals may have arrived by boat before being loaded into the U-Haul at a location in southern Coral Gables.
Chief Patrol Agent Jeffrey Dinise of the Miami Sector shared photos on social media and wrote, “On Friday, U.S. Border Patrol agents, @HSI_Miami & @CoralGablesPD responded to a human smuggling event in Coral Gables, FL. Agents arrested 25 illegal aliens (21 Chinese, 3 Ecuadorians, 1 Brazilian) along with 3 smugglers. The subjects will be processed for prosecution/deportation. ”
NEW: 21 illegal aliens from China arrested by Border Patrol in a human smuggling bust in Coral Gables, FL. Very unusual. Looks like the smugglers were using a U-Haul van. Good bust by Miami sector Border Patrol. @USBPChiefMIP https://t.co/bPFIp1NaSe
