From NBC News: The Senate voted Monday to pass a bill to crack down on immigration, the first piece of legislation congressional Republicans hope to send newly sworn-in President Donald Trump for a signature.

The vote for final passage of the Laken Riley Act was 64-35, with 12 Democrats joining Republicans to approve it.

The bill, which was amended in the Senate last week, will be sent back for another vote in the Republican-led House, where it is expected to pass easily before it goes to Trump’s desk to become law. The House passed a version of the bill 264-159 this month, with 48 Democrats voting for it.

“It sends a message that we recognize the concerns that Americans have had out there with what has happened at the southern border,” Sen. Mike Rounds, R-S.D., told NBC News. “And this is a message that we’re going to clean up our own laws inside and we’re going to make America safer.”

The following 12 Democrats crossed the aisle and voted with Republicans to support the bill.

  • Catherine Cortez Masto, Nevada
  • Jacky Rosen, Nevada
  • John Fetterman, Pennsylvania
  • Ruben Gallego, Arizona
  • Maggie Hassan, New Hampshire
  • Jeanne Shaheen, New Hampshire
  • Mark Kelly, Arizona
  • Jon Ossoff, Georgia
  • Raphael Warnock, Georgia
  • Gary Peters, Michigan
  • Elissa Slotkin, Michigan
  • Mark Warner, Virginia.

Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA), referring to an Iowa girl who was killed by an illegal alien, wrote, “Nearly 9 years after Iowan Sarah Root was killed by an illegal immigrant, the Senate has passed my Sarah’s Law as an amendment to the Laken Riley Act. We are taking action to ensure our laws no longer prioritize illegal immigrants over Americans.”

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) wrote, “The tragic death of Laken Riley was entirely preventable, and it highlights the devastating consequences of the Biden administration’s failure to enforce immigration laws. The Laken Riley Act prioritizes the safety of American citizens by ensuring illegal aliens who commit crimes, like theft, are detained and removed from our country before they can re-offend. We owe it to Laken, her family, and countless families across the nation that have been devastated by the administration’s harmful open-border policies to protect our communities from further harm.”
