President Biden’s claim that the Equal Rights Amendment is now “the law of the land” has drawn ridicule in his final days, including from Vice President-elect JD Vance.
“Hey Joe if we’re doing fake s— on the way out can you declare Pete Rose into the Hall of Fame?” Vance wrote on X, mocking the president. “See you in two days!”
Vance’s sarcastic suggestion to induct Pete Rose into the Baseball Hall of Fame was due to Rose’s ban from the league in 1989 after an investigation found he illegally gambled on MLB games, including those involving the Cincinnati Reds, while managing the team. Rose agreed to a permanent ineligibility deal with Commissioner Bart Giamatti, which allowed him to avoid a formal admission of betting on baseball while retaining the right to petition for reinstatement. Despite multiple appeals over the years, his ban was never lifted.
As a player, Rose won three World Series titles, earned NL MVP in 1973, made 17 All-Star appearances, and holds the MLB record for most hits with 4,256. He passed away this past September.

Biden, citing the American Bar Association, argued that the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) has met all requirements to be added to the Constitution and declared it “part of our Constitution.” However, the National Archives disagreed, and Biden’s claim on X that the ERA is the “law of the land” drew criticism, with some calling him a “dictator.”
The ERA, which guarantees equal rights regardless of sex, was revived by New York Democrats in response to the Supreme Court’s June 2022 Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision. Social media users were quick to challenge Biden’s statement, pointing out that the ERA has not been officially ratified.
