Ohio Republican governor Mike DeWine announced Friday that he has chosen Ohio Lt. Governor Jon Husted to fill U.S. Senate seat vacated by Vice President-elect J.D. Vance, who will be inaugurated on Monday.

Vance resigned from his senate seat effective Friday, January 10.  He had only served two years of his six-year Senate term, leaving another four years remaining for the term.

Husted will fill the seat until a special election can be held in 2026, then if he wins that election, he will fill the seat for the remaining two years, until the 2028 election.

Husted, 57, a Republican, has been the Lt. Governor of Ohio since January 2019. His political resume also incudes the following positions:

  • Jan. 2011 – Jan. 2019 – Ohio Secretary of State
  • Jan. 2009 – Jan. 2011 – Ohio State Senator
  • Jan. 2001 – Jan. 2009 – Ohio House of Representatives
  • Jan. 2005 – Jan. 2009 – Ohio Speaker of the House

The day after the presidential election, Husted posted the  following statement on social media:

“Donald Trump’s victory is the greatest political comeback in American history. Once again, the working men and women of our nation will have a champion in the White House.

“Ohio is ready to work with President Trump to achieve the America First agenda: strengthening border security, curbing inflation, and creating jobs in the heartland.”
