California Gov. Gavin Newsom criticized President-elect Trump on Wednesday for his recent remarks about Los Angeles wildfires. Earlier that day, President Biden visited Los Angeles with Newsom for a briefing but shifted the conversation to his experience as a great-grandfather, though Newsom was “proud” to stand with him.

“People are literally fleeing,” Newsom told CNN’s Anderson Cooper in an interview that aired on his show Wednesday. “People have lost their lives. Kids lost their schools, families completely torn asunder, churches burned down… [Trump] wanted to politicize it. I have a lot of thoughts, and I know what I wanna say. I won’t. I stood next to a President of the United States of America today, and I was proud to be with Joe Biden, and he had the backs of every single person in this community, he didn’t play politics.”

However, Trump previously warned Newsom to improve forest management to prevent wildfires. During a 2018 visit to Paradise, California, after the Camp Fire, Trump urged Newsom to “take care of the floors” while touring the devastation. This exchange has resurfaced online amid criticism of Newsom as the Los Angeles wildfires rage on, with water shortages at hydrants and complaints about power lines not being shut off.
