From the New York Post: Heart-pounding footage shows the moment a boat blew its top at a Florida marina, leaving one person dead and another five injured on Monday.
The small boat exploded around 6 p.m. and then the fire spread at Lauderdale Marina as shell-shocked bystanders looked on helplessly, per video from EarthCam.
The top half of the boat launched into the air before landing back on the lower part of the vessel, NBC 6 reported.
Witnesses who were at a nearby restaurant in Fort Lauderdale told the Miami Herald they saw the boat fueling up before the explosion.
In the terrifying video, people are seen running for their lives after the explosion happens on the boat.
They then race back to try to help the victims, as a small fire is seen growing in the boat. Soon, the entire boat is engulfed in a raging inferno, as the bystanders looked on helplessly. A second, smaller boat also caught fire.
Five victims were rushed to nearby hospitals. Another person was found dead in the water, and has been identified as Sebastien Gauthier, 41, of Quebec, Canada.
An employee at 15th Street Fisheries told the Miami Herald, “I turn around and see the boat just go up. People flying up in the air. This lady hit the concrete. This little girl was crying for her mother. Man, it was bad.”
A nearby restaurant worker who rushed out to help told Local10 News, “I ran out there to see if anybody needed help. One guy was on fire, another person was in the water. It was just chaos all at once.”
Boat explosion and fire occurred at a Fort Lauderdale marina around 5:55 PM. Several people were injured.
