John Darrel Schultz, 53, of Kempner, Texas, has a criminal history dating back to 2022. According to a Texas court record, Schultz was arrested for driving while intoxicated in Williamson County on Oct. 25, 2022.
He was sentenced to four days in Williamson County Jail on May 30, 2023, according to court records.
On Saturday, Schultz was driving a black truck near the intersection of I-35 and I-14 in Belton. He refused to stop and eventually exited I-14 and drove into the Killeen parking lot and through the front doors of the JC Penney, according to Texas DPS.
Schultz reportedly ran over multiple people when he crashed through the store. Police ran after him, and were assisted by at least two off-duty officers who were shopping with their families in the mall.
