While announcing his nominee for for U.S. Ambassador to Denmark on Sunday, President-elect Donald Trump once again called for the United States to buy the Artic island of Greenland.
“For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity,” Trump wrote.
Trump had made the same suggestion in 2019, during his first term in the Oval Office, saying it was needed for strategic reasons. Greenland’s leadership made it clear the island was not for sale then, and they are now firing back with the same response.
Greenland, a large icy Arctic island with over 50,000 residents, is a self-ruling territory of Denmark, CBS News explained.
Greenland Prime Minister Múte Egede declared in a statement on Monday, “Greenland is ours 🇬🇱 We are not for sale and will never be for sale. We must not lose our year-long struggle for freedom. However, we must continue to be open to cooperation and trade with the whole world, especially with our neighbours. Since all cooperation and trade cannot go through Denmark. All cooperation with us must be based on our values.”
