From Fox News: President-elect Trump suggested to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau last week that if a tariff for failing to address trade and immigration issues would kill the neighbor to the north’s economy, maybe it should become the 51st state, sources told Fox News.

Last Friday, Trudeau flew to Mar-a-Lago unannounced after Trump threatened to impose sweeping tariffs on Canadian products. Specifically, Trump is threatening to impose 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico over their failures to curb the flow of illegal immigrants and illicit drugs from those countries into the U.S.

Now, new details are beginning to emerge about the meeting between the two men, which Trump called “very productive.”

Before nibbling on crab cocktail and slurping down oysters, the issues of tariffs, border security and trade deficits were front and center.

Trump had blasted out a warning to Canada and Mexico last week, saying that unless Mexico and Canada took responsibility and stopped the flow of drugs and illegal aliens coming into the United States, he was going to slap them with a 25% tariff.

Leaders of both countries immediately began to scramble to reach out to Trump, and Trudeau then flew to Mar-a-Lago to meet with him.

Two people who heard the discussion between Trudeau and Trump have released details of the conversation, and said that while Trump was very welcoming and cordial, he also made it perfectly clear what he expects Trudeau to accomplish.

Trump reportedly minced no words in telling Trudeau that Canada has failed the US by allowing drugs and illegal aliens to cross the border. He also raked him over the coals over the trade deficit, estimated to be over $100 billion.  Trump said he Trudeau doesn’t address the issues, he will be hit with a 25% tariff as Day One of Trump’s new administration.

Trudeau complained that the tariff would kill the Canadian economy. Trump fired back by asking, “so your country can’t survive unless it’s ripping off the U.S. to the tune of $100 billion?”

Trump then piled on the pressure by ‘jokingly’ suggesting another alternative: Canada could become the 51st state of the US and Trudeau could just be the governor. This reportedly prompted ‘nervous laughter’ from Trudeau and others at the table.

When someone noted that Canada is very liberal, Trump joked that it could then be broken into two states, one conservative and one liberal. He told Trudeau that the title of prime minister suits him better, but made it clear that if Trudeau cannot do his job without ripping off the United States, the tariffs are coming.

The nearly three-hour visit and dinner reportedly ended on a ‘very friendly and very positive’ note.

Trudeau posted a photo on social media later and wrote, “Thanks for dinner last night, President Trump. I look forward to the work we can do together, again.”
