From Fox News: U.S. Rep. Ritchie Torres, a Democrat from the Bronx, blasted New York leaders over the weekend for failed criminal justice reforms that enabled “a homicidal rampage” in broad daylight last week, resulting in the murders of three innocent people at the hands of a violent, mentally ill man released from custody early.

“The bureaucrat in DOC [Department of Correction] who authorized the early release of Ramon should be fired,” Torres wrote in a fiery letter to Gov. Kathy Hochul and New York Mayor Eric Adams, both Democrats. “Those who cannot be entrusted with public safety should no longer be employed by the people of New York.”

He added that “layers upon layers of government failure” enabled Ramon Rivera, an eight-time criminal whose most recent stint behind bars involved a transfer to the psych ward at Bellevue Hospital, where he attacked a correction officer.

He blasted Hochul last week as “the new Joe Biden” and urged her to get out of the way if Democrats want to maintain their grip on power in the Empire State.

Torres, 36, who is openly gay, is Puerto Rican, but was born in the Bronx, New York. He confirmed on Monday that he is considering running against Hochul for the governor’s seat, saying he’s launching a “listening tour” across the state before making a decision in mid-2025.

In his letter to Hochul and Adams, Torres wrote, “These tragedies are preventable but neither the city nor the state seem to possess the political will to prevent them, despite having the tools to do so. The state refuses to grant the mayor the legal authority he needs to prevent dangerous people from roaming the streets. The city refuses to hold DOC accountable for the early release of a demonstrably dangerous criminal who went on a stabbing spree. The end result is incompetence that is not only destructive but deadly for New Yorkers.”

In a social media post on Friday, Torres ripped into Hochul. He wrote:

Kathy Hochul is the new Joe Biden. She may be in denial about the depth of her vulnerabilities as a Democratic nominee. A Democratic incumbent who is less popular in New York than Donald Trump is in grave danger of losing to a Republican in 2026–an outcome not seen in 30 years.

Waiting until it’s too late gave us a Republican President in 2024 and could give us a Republican Governor in 2026. Let’s avoid repeating history and avoid sleepwalking toward impending disaster and defeat. “Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”

“During his incarceration, Ramon Rivera was transferred to the psychiatric unit of Bellevue, where he assaulted a corrections officer. Not only did the State and City fail to punish Rivera, the City released Rivera early for “good behavior.” Rivera went on stab three innocent New Yorkers to death in a homicidal rampage,” Torres wrote in outrage on Monday.

In another post from his congressional X account, Torres wrote, “There must be consequences when government fails and when innocent New Yorkers lose their lives. We live in a City and State where the only people who seem to suffer consequences are the victims of crime and their loved ones. Enough is enough.”

Although considered to be a progressive Democrat, Torres has distanced himself from the radical ‘Squad,’ and has stood firm in his support for Israel and their right to defend themselves from the Hamas terror group.
