Actress and Democrat surrogate Eva Longoria clarified this week that she remains a “proud American” and hasn’t left the U.S. over Donald Trump’s 2024 election win, despite claims in headlines.
Her remarks follow backlash from a Marie Claire interview in which she criticized President-elect Trump as a “convicted criminal” and acknowledged her privilege in being able to leave what she called a “dystopian” country. According to a report by The Daily Wire, the 49-year-old actress also revealed she has lived abroad for three years, citing California’s taxes and homelessness.
“Will you please let them know I didn’t move out of the United States because of Trump?” Longoria told “The View” co-host Ana Navarro on Friday, according to Fox News. “I’ve been in Europe for almost three years. That’s in the article, by the way, the article says that. People just grabbed some clickbait stuff to be divisive. Which makes me so sad that everything you say is just meant to be divisive when we can’t be that way right now. I didn’t leave because of the political environment. I left because my work took me there.”
Longoria added: “I’m a proud American,” the 49-year-old continued. “I’ve always been a proud American. Proud Texan, proud American. I didn’t want it to be taken that I left because of Trump — absolutely not — or because of the elections.”

In the recent Marie Claire interview, Longoria acknowledged her “privilege” in being able to “escape and go somewhere,” adding: “Most Americans aren’t so lucky. They’re going to be stuck in this dystopian country, and my anxiety and sadness is for them… If he keeps his promises, it’s going to be a scary place.”
Longoria, who endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris and spoke at the Democratic National Convention, was expectedly upset about the election results.
“The shocking part is not that [Donald] Trump won,” she said. “It’s that a convicted criminal who spews so much hate could hold the highest office.”
