Veteran sportscaster Sage Steele dismissed rumors of her interest in becoming Trump’s press secretary, calling the claims “fake news.”

While President-elect Trump has rapidly assembled his Cabinet, the White House press secretary role remains unfilled. Axios reported potential candidates include Steele, CNN contributor Scott Jennings, RNC spokesperson Elizabeth Pipko, Trump campaign spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt, and former Trump official Monica Crowley. One person off the list is Trump attorney Alina Habba, who said Thursday that she is not considering the role of press secretary.

Steele, 51, a vocal supporter of President-elect Trump who campaigned for him in Pennsylvania last month, denied interest in the press secretary role in a post on X Thursday.

“Not sure how these rumors began about me ‘vying’ to be Press Secretary, but it’s definitely fake news! I haven’t had a single conversation with anyone about that job, and have no desire to do so!” Steele wrote. “Honestly, it was the honor of a lifetime to be a small part of @TeamTrump during the campaign – something I NEVER imagined – but I wholeheartedly believe in @realDonaldTrump @JDVance & am excited to find ways to continue to serve. It took me years to not be afraid to speak up. That fear is gone forever, and I hope others are beginning to feel the same. LFG!”

Steele left ESPN in 2023 after 15 years, where she hosted “SportsCenter” and “NBA Countdown.” In 2022, she sued ESPN, claiming her free speech rights were violated after being reprimanded in 2021 for criticizing Disney’s COVID vaccine mandate and Barack Obama’s racial identification. The lawsuit was settled, and she departed the network in August.
