Multiple reports confirm Republicans will retain control of the House by a slim margin, giving President-elect Trump and his party full power in Washington.
With a GOP-led Congress, Trump can fill key administration roles and push his agenda over the next two years, though Democrats hold small majorities in both chambers. House Republicans’ narrow win, driven by Trump’s strong electoral victory over Kamala Harris, deals a setback to Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and the Democrats.
By Wednesday afternoon, Republicans netted a one-seat gain in the House, flipping seven seats while Democrats flipped six, securing the 218 seats needed for a majority over Democrats’ 208. Last week, Republicans also flipped three Senate seats, gaining control of the upper chamber.
“It is a beautiful morning in Washington. It is a new day in America,” a celebratory Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said on the steps of the Capitol, flanked by his leadership team, as the House returned to Washington on Tuesday. “The sun is shining, and that is a reflection about how we all feel.”
