President-elect Donald Trump announced Wednesday on Truth Social his intent to nominate Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida as U.S. attorney general.

Trump wrote that Gaetz “has distinguished himself in Congress through his focus on achieving desperately needed reform at the Department of Justice.”

Gaetz replied on X, “It will be an honor to serve as President Trump’s Attorney General!”

If confirmed by the Senate, Gaetz will replace Attorney General Merrick Garland, under whose leadership the DOJ investigated Gaetz for sex trafficking but ultimately did not press charges. Gaetz is also still under investigation by the House Ethics Committee.

The 42-year-old lawmaker, who has carved out a reputation as a proud and vocal Trump loyalist, has aggressively criticized the DOJ prosecution of Trump by special counsel Jack Smith.
