According to an anonymous source, President-elect Donald Trump has chosen U.S. Rep. Michael Waltz, a retired Army National Guard officer, as his national security adviser.

The decision raises concerns on Capitol Hill about removing GOP House members, as it would trigger a new election to fill the seat.

If confirmed, Waltz would lead on crucial national security issues, from dealing with Ukraine and countering the Russia-North Korea alliance to managing Iran proxy threats in the Middle East and the Israel-Gaza ceasefire push. A three-term GOP congressman from Florida, Waltz, the first Green Beret in the House, was recently reelected and has chaired the House Armed Services subcommittee on readiness and served on the Foreign Affairs and Intelligence Committees.

Waltz, a strong Trump supporter who backed 2020 election challenges, is known for his hawkish stance on China, calling for a boycott of the 2022 Beijing Olympics over COVID-19 and Uighur human rights abuses. He has criticized the chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, demanding accountability for the deaths of 13 U.S. service members at Abbey Gate and the Americans left behind. Waltz also echoes Trump’s critique of a “woke” military, arguing it’s overly focused on diversity and equity programs.

“I am ready to get to work to better equip our military and turn our focus away from woke priorities and back to winning wars. Our national security depends on it,” Waltz said in a statement in last year.

Virginia Military Institute graduate and former Green Beret Waltz served four years in the Army before joining the Florida Guard. He completed multiple combat tours in Afghanistan, the Middle East, and Africa and earned four Bronze Stars (two for valor). He also served as a Pentagon policy adviser under defense chiefs Donald Rumsfeld and Robert Gates.
