REPORT: Trudeau announces immigration restrictions as electoral defeat looms

From the Washington Examiner: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced restrictions on immigration for the coming years, as a major electoral defeat looms large.

“We’re going to significantly reduce the number of immigrants coming to Canada for the next two years. This is temporary — to pause our population growth and let our economy catch up,” he announced in a post on X. “We have to get the system working right for all Canadians.”

At a news conference, Trudeau pitched the change as a temporary “pause” in order to allow logistics to catch up with the growing population, promising further investments in healthcare, housing, and social services.

“Our immigration system has always been responsible and it has always been flexible,” he said. “We are acting today because of the tumultuous times as we emerged from the pandemic, between addressing labor needs and maintaining population growth, we didn’t get the balance quite right.”

At a news conference, Trudeau again touted, “Canadians are justifiably proud of our immigration system.”

Marc Miller, Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, said, “Today, we announced the 2025-2027 Immigration Levels plan. Immigration is essential to our country’s economic success and growth. In response to the evolving needs of our country this plan will pause population growth in the short term to achieve well-managed, sustainable growth.”

“Immigration is central to the story of Canada. Our decision to temporarily reduce the number of immigrants is a pragmatic one that addresses the needs of our economy right now,” Trudeau announced.

But exactly two years ago, Trudeau bragged on social media, “Last year, Canada welcomed more than 405,000 newcomers – the most we’ve ever welcomed in one year. We’re building on that and setting higher targets in the years ahead, because immigration is critical to growing our economy and helping businesses find the workers they need.”
