Former President Donald Trump, the 2024 Republican nominee, has repeatedly stated that one way he will bring jobs back to America is to implement tariffs against companies who use foreign labor and then try to ship their products back to the United States.
In response, Kamala Harris has claimed to her followers that Trump’s plan for tariff’s is essentially a national sales tax that will drive costs of products up even more.
Trump has pointed out that the tariff rule will prompt companies to bring their manufacturing back to the US in order to avoid the tariff.
In a post on his Truth Social page on Thursday, Trump lashed out at Democrats for making the false claims about a national sale tax.
“I am NOT proposing a National Sales Tax, as the Democrats say in their Advertisements against me. Dems know what they are saying is a blatant lie,” Trump declared.
“I am proposing tariffs on other countries that take advantage of us, hardly a NST [national sales tax.] These tariffs are paid for by the abusing country, NOT THE AMERICAN CONSUMER. They do not cause inflation, and will MAKE AMERICA RICH AGAIN!” he explained.
Last week, in a CNBC interview, billionaire Howard Lutnick explained how Trump’s tariffs will be used as a negotiation tactic to make the U.S. a “bunch of money.”
Lutnick shot down the media narrative that tariffs would increase inflation, journalist Collin Rugg wrote, sharing the video on X.

They’re acting like it will end up being a blanket tariff and inflation will soar.
It’s a bargaining chip. The media knows this but they like to pretend to be oblivious.

Of course the Bloomberg interviewer understands this. It’s not complicated stuff.
But he has to pretend to be oblivious.
And it’s not like Trump is going to sit on stage and say: “Oh gee, I’m using it as a negotiation tactic!”
He’d give up all leverage that way.
