Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi commented on President Biden ending his re-election campaign, clarifying that her concerns were about the campaign, not Biden himself.
In a CNN interview with Christiane Amanpour, Pelosi addressed reports of her influence in Biden’s decision and discussed why it was the right move for the party.
Pelosi, along with other Democrats like Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, reportedly urged Biden to step down after a poor debate performance in June. Amanpour asked Pelosi if she had spoken to Biden since Vice President Harris replaced him as the top candidate.
“I haven’t spoken to him since July, but of course, we‘ve been out of session for a while and I‘ve been on the campaign trail constantly,” she said, stating that she has “great respect for the president… I think his legacy is a very substantial one for our country. It is our legacy too. I did not want that to be lost… But the campaign, I thought, was not going in the right direction, and I expressed my concern about that.”
In a recent interview on The Guardian’s Politics Weekly America podcast, Pelosi expressed her respect for Biden, calling him “one of the great consequential presidents.” She added, “I think his legacy had to be protected, I didn’t see that happening in the course that it was on, the election was on.”
