China’s military concluded a day of war games near Taiwan on Monday, calling it a warning to “Taiwan independence forces.”

The exercises drew condemnation from both Taiwan and the U.S. Taiwan had anticipated more drills following President Lai Ching-te’s National Day speech. Still, analysts suggest China’s actions were measured to avoid escalating tensions during the U.S. presidential election race.

Beijing condemned President Lai’s address, stating that China has no right to represent Taiwan, though he offered cooperation. In response, China’s Eastern Theatre Command conducted “Joint Sword-2024B” drills in the Taiwan Strait and areas around Taiwan to the north, south, and east.

“The drill also serves as a stern warning to the separatist acts of Taiwan independence forces. It is a legitimate and necessary operation for safeguarding state sovereignty and national unity,” it said in a statement in Chinese and English.

The escalation of China’s military scoping of Taiwan raises the question of when China plans to invade the separatist island and if it’ll happen before the election. Many believe their invasion will be based on the outcome of who wins, either former President Donald Trump or Vice President Kamala Harris.
