From the Daily Mail: Terrifying drone footage shows massive, 28-foot waves caused by Hurricane Milton as it starts to impact Florida, with the historic storm doubling in size before it is expected to make landfall Wednesday night in the Tampa Bay area.
The footage, posted by the NOAA earlier Wednesday, was taken from drone cameras in an attempt to study the devastating effects of storms like Milton and Helene.
The storm is bringing rain and high winds at the Tampa Bay on its steady and potentially catastrophic march toward the west coast of Florida, where officials sounded urgent warnings for residents to evacuate or face grim odds of survival.
‘Where you are now is where you are going to be during the duration of Milton,’ said Manatee county’s chief of emergency management, Matt Myers. ‘The conditions are rapidly getting worse.’
NOAA shared the video on X and wrote, “Inside Hurricane Milton, @saildrone reported wave height of 28.12 feet and wind gusts as strong as 75.95 mph while 40 nautical miles from the center of the storm. This research represents a collaborative endeavor to better understand the role of the ocean in hurricanes.”
