From NBC News: A 10-year-old student has been charged with felony terrorist threat for allegedly threatening to commit a school shooting at a Kerrville, Texas, middle school, police said Monday.

The child, who was not named by authorities, posted “a hoax threat to social media with the intent of causing alarm or panic,” the Kerrville Police Department said in a statement.

The department said it was aware of social media posts threatening to carry out a shooting at Hal Peterson Middle School on Tuesday and “immediately initiated a thorough investigation into these threats.”

The Kerrville Police Department released the following announcement in a Facebook post Monday:

The Kerrville Police Department received several reports overnight regarding social media posts threatening a school shooting at Hal Peterson Middle School for Tuesday, September 24, 2024. The Kerrville Police Department immediately initiated a thorough investigation into these threats. Kerrville Police Department School Resource Officers began gathering information to determine the origin of these threats in cooperation with Kerrville Independent School District officials.

The investigation into this matter revealed that a ten-year-old Kerrville Independent School District student posted a hoax threat to social media with the intent of causing alarm or panic. No valid threat to Hal Peterson Middle School existed. The juvenile was charged with Texas Penal Code 22.07 Terrorist Threat, a felony of the third degree.

The Kerrville Police Department is fully committed to ensuring the safety of every member of our community, and will immediately and thoroughly investigate threats of school violence. The legal consequences for people who make threats, including juveniles, can be severe and permanent. We strongly urge parents to speak with their children about the seriousness of making threats, or posting information to social media that reference violence to our schools. Remind your children that school threats are a felony and will have serious consequences.
