Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was sharply criticized by a steelworker during a photo op in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

The worker, struggling to make ends meet, rejected Trudeau’s offer of doughnuts and voiced frustration over high taxes, medical expenses, and government aid to those he called “lazy.”

When Trudeau mentioned the recent 25% tariffs meant to protect jobs, the worker retorted, “What about the 40% taxes I am paying? And I don’t have a doctor.”

Footage of the heated exchange, obtained by CTV News, quickly went viral.

Trudeau responded by highlighting a multimillion-dollar government investment that he said would secure the man’s job for years. The worker, however, expressed doubt, predicting Trudeau would be voted out.

Trudeau acknowledged the upcoming election, encouraging everyone to vote and reiterated his commitment to job investment. The worker replied, “I don’t believe you for a second,” and added that unemployed Canadians seemed to have better access to affordable health care, prompting the steelworker to also question, “Probably like my neighbor who doesn’t go to work because she’s lazy?”

Trudeau replied, “Most Canadians try to stick up for each other, and that’s what we’ve got to keep doing,” before wishing the man good luck. The exchange ended with the laborer seemingly refusing to shake Trudeau’s hand.

The next federal election in Canada is scheduled for October 20, 2025, as Trudeau’s government is under scrutiny as the country faces a cost-of-living crisis.
