Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign has appointed Rev. Jennifer Butler as its national faith engagement director.

Butler, a minister in the liberal Presbyterian Church (USA) and founder of the activist group Faith in Public Life, has been vocal about her belief that Christianity has been “hijacked by white supremacists” and sees the Democratic ticket as a chance for Christians to “reclaim faith for justice.”

Faith in Public Life advocates for progressive policies on issues like immigration, voting, abortion, and LGBT rights. Butler herself believes “it’s impossible to follow Jesus and not embrace CRT [Critical Race Theory].”

Butler has also criticized “Christian nationalism” and urged Christians to denounce it, particularly in response to the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, writing the following:

“We must do more than just watch the January 6th hearings aghast. We cannot allow our faith to continue to be hijacked by white supremacists covered in religious language. For the sake of our faith and our democracy, we must denounce Christian nationalism and reclaim a faith that values and affirms the human dignity of all people. Including our own.”

In November 2023, Butler labeled the election of Republican Rep. Mike Johnson as Speaker of the House as “a threat to global democracy,” accusing him of using religion for political manipulation. She urged U.S. religious communities to oppose the rise of Christian nationalism.

Earlier, in November 2021, Butler joined other faith leaders in condemning the acquittal of Kyle Rittenhouse, who shot three protesters in Kenosha, Wisconsin, in what he claimed was self-defense. Butler called the verdict “the newest face of an old evil” and accused Rittenhouse of “murdering” the two men who died.

In 2017, Rev. Jennifer Butler was arrested while protesting on Capitol Hill against Republican efforts to repeal parts of the Affordable Care Act, which she argued would result in deaths.
