Election officials in Pennsylvania are warning that the results of the 2024 presidential race may not be available on election night.
This caution comes as former President Donald Trump and Sen. JD Vance campaign against Vice President Kamala Harris and Gov. Tim Walz. Pennsylvania Secretary of State Al Schmidt, appointed by Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro, explained that state law prohibits processing mail-in ballots before 7 a.m. on Election Day.
Schmidt, who previously clashed with Trump, noted that while other states allow earlier processing, Pennsylvania does not. This follows similar warnings in 2020 about delays in counting ballots.
On November 10, 2020, Republican members of Pennsylvania’s House of Representatives called for a legislative audit of the election results and demanded that results not be certified or electors seated until the audit was complete.
In June, a Marist poll showed Trump slightly ahead of President Joe Biden in Pennsylvania, before Biden withdrew from the race. A more recent Insider Advantage poll, conducted between August 18-19, 2024, found Trump leading Kamala Harris by one point, 47% to 46%, with a ± 3.5 percent margin of error.
