Pope Francis warned of a growing crisis in Europe driven by a “wave of populism” that threatens the continent’s values.
Speaking to the European Alpbach Forum, the pontiff noted that this rise in populist movements has led to the erosion of key ideals and a neglect of the vulnerable. He specifically pointed to the increasing influence of conservative populist groups across various European nations, including Italy, France, Poland, and Hungary.
Francis, known for his critical stance on right-leaning populism, previously urged Europeans to prioritize the collective good of Europe over national interests.
“The thinking must be ‘Europe first, then each one of us,’” the pope said in a wide-ranging interview with the Italian daily La Stampa. “‘Each one of us’ is not secondary, it is important, but Europe counts more. Never forget that ‘the whole is greater than the parts.’ Globalization, unity, should not be conceived as a sphere, but as a polyhedron: each people retains its identity in unity with others.”
