Former President Obama took the stage at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Tuesday evening, praising President Biden just weeks after allegedly playing a role in urging Biden to step down from his re-election bid:

“It’s been 16 years since I had the honor of accepting this party’s nomination for president. And I know that’s hard to believe since I haven’t aged a bit, but it’s true. And looking back, I can say without question that my first big decision as your nominee turned out to be one of my best. And that was asking Joe Biden to serve by my side as vice president… Other than some common Irish blood, Joe and I come from different backgrounds. But we became brothers. And as we worked together for eight – sometimes, pretty tough – years, what I came to admire most about Joe wasn’t just his smarts and experience, but it was his empathy and his decency. And his hard-earned resiliency and his unshakable belief that everyone in this country deserves a fair shot… History will remember Joe Biden as an outstanding president who defended democracy at a moment of great danger. And I am proud to call him my president, but even prouder to call him my friend.”

Harris became the Democratic nominee for president after Biden withdrew from the race following an extremely poor June debate performance against Trump. The debate fueled widespread concerns about Biden’s mental acuity and age, even among traditional Democratic allies and media outlets. Despite repeated denials from the White House and Biden’s campaign, he announced last month on a Sunday afternoon that he was ending his re-election bid and would focus on his remaining time in office.

Notably, Obama’s allies had been instrumental in urging Biden to step aside for a stronger candidate to challenge Trump. Last month, David Axelrod, Obama’s former chief campaign strategist, bluntly stated that Biden is “not winning this race.” Shortly after co-hosting a high-profile campaign event with Biden and Obama in Los Angeles, actor and longtime Obama friend George Clooney published a bombshell op-ed urging Biden to withdraw. Jon Favreau, Obama’s former speechwriting director, echoed this sentiment, revealing that he, too, attended the fundraiser and observed Biden’s mental acuity firsthand, reinforcing calls for Biden to step aside.
