During a recent live-streamed conversation with former President Donald Trump, X owner Elon Musk suggested to Trump that there should be a committee devoted entirely to issues affecting the economy, such as government spending, and controlling government waste.
Musk voiced concern that the U.S. national debt is currently growing by around one trillion dollars every 100 days.
“We’re currently adding, I think, a trillion dollars to the deficit every roughly every 100 days,” Musk explained. “And the interest payments on the national debt have now exceeded the defense budget. It’s on the order of a trillion dollars, and it keeps growing.”
“I think it would be great to just have a government efficiency commission that takes a look at these things and just ensures that the taxpayer money, the taxpayers’ hard-earned money, is spent in a good way,” Musk told Trump. “And I’d be happy to help out on such a commission if it were formed.”
During an interview on Monday, Trump was asked if he would consider naming Musk to an advisory role or give him a place on his future Cabinet.
“He’s a very smart guy. I certainly would, if he would do it, I certainly would. He’s a brilliant guy,” Trump responded.

In a social media post on Friday, Musk wrote, “Inflation is caused by the Federal government spending more than it earns, because they just print more money to make up the difference. To solve inflation, reduce wasteful government spending. Your tax dollars should be spent well, not poorly.”
