Cucumbers in 31 states and the District of Columbia are being recalled after hundreds of people fell ill due to salmonella contamination.
According to the New York Post, the CDC confirmed 449 cases of Salmonella Africana and Salmonella Braenderup infections, with 125 hospitalizations. No deaths have been recorded thus far.
The outbreak has been traced to untreated canal water used by a grower in Florida.
Symptoms of salmonella infection typically include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps starting 6 hours to 6 days after exposure. Most people recover within a week without treatment.
However, young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems may experience more severe symptoms requiring medical care.
