Sweden announced on Thursday that it has confirmed its first case of a more contagious strain of mpox, a viral infection spreading in central and eastern Africa. This marks the first detection of this strain outside of Africa.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recently declared mpox a global public health emergency for the second time in two years after an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo spread to 12 neighboring countries.
Mpox, which spreads through close contact, is divided into two viral groups: clade I and clade II. The strain responsible for the current outbreak is a version of clade I, known for causing more severe illness and higher mortality rates. This strain is also more easily transmitted through routine close contact, such as within households, unlike the clade II strain, which spread primarily through sexual contact among men during the 2022 outbreak.
#monkeypox was just found in the wastewater of two districts in SanFran. This happens right as the World Health Org declares Mpox a global emergency. Just in time for early voting, I wonder how it got there? I wonder what’s next? pic.twitter.com/jrntx1m5xw
