Donald Trump addressed the Republican National Convention last night, stating he was “not supposed to be here,” referring to the recent assassination attempt. Five days earlier, an assassin by the name of Matthew Thomas Crooks fired bullets at him during a rally in Pennsylvania, one of which grazed his ear.
In his 90-minute speech, Trump spoke on the illegal immigrant crisis, Biden’s foreign policy, and China, mentioning President Joe Biden by name only once. He recounted the attack, praising Secret Service agents for their protection and attributing his survival to “the grace of almighty God.”
Despite the evening’s bombast, including a balloon shower and an appearance by Hulk Hogan, Trump’s speech was subdued. He vowed to curb illegal immigration with the “largest deportation operation” and promised to end international crises created by the current administration. Additionally, he pledged to create a missile defense system akin to Israel’s Iron Dome and restore global “peace, stability, and harmony.”
