On January 27, 2017, President Trump signed an executive order banning travel to the U.S. for 90 days from seven predominantly Muslim countries—Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen—and suspending Syrian refugee resettlement. This sparked nationwide protests and legal challenges, arguing the order was religious discrimination. Court injunctions temporarily blocked the order, and a second iteration faced similar opposition. However, on June 26, 2018, the Supreme Court allowed a third version to take effect, adding Venezuela (limited to officials) and North Korea.

In 2020, the Trump administration expanded visa restrictions to six more countries—Eritrea, Kyrgyzstan, Myanmar, Nigeria, Sudan, and Tanzania—citing national security concerns. Currently, nationals from thirteen countries face various travel restrictions.

President Biden reversed the Trump travel ban. On January 20, 2021, his first day in office, Biden signed an executive order lifting the travel restrictions that had been imposed by the former president.
