President Donald Trump said Monday that he intended to shorten the timeline for Russia to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine, citing continued attacks on Ukrainian cities.
On July 14, Trump said Russian President Vladimir Putin could expect additional sanctions and tariffs if the country did not stop fighting in Ukraine within 50 days, putting the deadline at Sept. 2. But he changed his mind after seeing the continued attacks on Ukraine.
On Tuesday, he announced that Russia now has only 10 days, according to NBC News.
To avoid the sanctions, Russia must come to a ceasefire agreement with Ukraine.
“And I don’t know if it’s going to affect Russia, because he wants to, obviously, probably keep the war going, but we’re going to put on tariffs,” Trump said, referring to Putin. “And the various things that you put on, it may or may not affect them, but it could.”
